Why do you need a fire risk assessment?

DC2 Fire Solutions - Ipswich

Nobody expects a fire, but when one occurs it can be devastating.  There is a large amount of responsibility placed on the responsible person. At DC2 we know how confusing that can be.

Here at DC2 were on a mission to keep your business safe from fire.

Our team has over 10 years of experience working in the fire safety industry. In that time we have gained a vast knowledge of every premises type and hazards that they present.

We work with the customer to ensure that they are as prepared as possible should the worst happen.

A fire risk assessment is one of the most important steps any business, landlord, or organisation can take to protect people, property, and livelihoods. In the UK, it is also a legal requirement under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 for almost all non-domestic premises, including offices, shops, warehouses, HMOs, holiday lets, factories, and communal areas in residential buildings.

At DC2 Fire Solutions, we provide professional fire risk assessments in Suffolk, Ipswich, East Anglia, and London to ensure you meet all your legal obligations while keeping occupants safe.

Who Needs a Fire Risk Assessment?

The short answer: almost everyone who controls a building or space. This includes:

  • Business owners and employers - responsible for workplace fire safety.

  • Landlords and letting agents – for HMOs, flats, and holiday lets.

  • Building owners and managers – responsible for shared or communal areas.

  • Schools, care homes, hospitality venues, and factories – where high occupancy or special risks exist.

Even if you believe your building is low risk, the law requires that you record, review, and update your fire risk assessment regularly.

Why DC2 Fire Solutions?

At DC2 we are proud to be recognised as one of the industry leading companies located in Suffolk and Essex. With years of experience we understand the wide variety of fire risks present within the work place. We work to the industry recognised best practice government approved PAS79 assessments. Legal requirements

  • It’s a legal requirement
Under UK law, if you are the Responsible Person for a building, you must arrange for a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment to be carried out. Failure to comply can lead to hefty fines, enforcement notices, or prosecution.

  • It protects lives
Fires can develop in minutes. A good assessment ensures you have working alarms, clear escape routes, and trained staff — giving people the best chance of escaping safely.

  • It protects property and business continuity
The cost of fire damage is often far greater than the cost of prevention. By identifying hazards early, you can reduce the likelihood of losing stock, equipment, and crucial business operations.

  • It improves insurance compliance
Many insurance companies require proof of an up-to-date fire risk assessment. Without it, claims may be reduced or rejected.

How Often Should You Review a Fire Risk Assessment?

We recommend a review at least once a year, or sooner if:

  • The layout of the building changes.

  • You change the use of the premises.

  • There is an increase in staff or visitors.

  • You introduce new equipment or processes.

  • A fire or near miss occurs.

What We Look At During a Fire Risk Assessment

When we visit your premises, we assess:

  • Fire hazards – electrical installations, heating equipment, combustible materials, hot works, smoking areas.

  • People at risk – staff, visitors, contractors, vulnerable persons, sleeping occupants.

  • Fire detection and warning systems – smoke alarms, manual call points, alarm panel checks.

  • Escape routes and exits – travel distances, exit signage, door mechanisms.

  • Firefighting equipment – extinguishers, fire blankets, hose reels.

  • Emergency lighting – ensuring safe evacuation if mains lighting fails.

  • Fire doors and compartmentation – slowing the spread of smoke and fire.

  • Staff training and drills – knowledge of evacuation procedures.

  • Fire safety policies and records – log books, testing schedules, maintenance records.
